Holidays from morality – Steven Cruz
The idea behind Steven Cruz’s work was an observation of gay subcultures such as gay saunas and other places or ways gay men resort to while in search of pleasure and anonymity. Cruz draws parallels between intercourse and the consumption of substance. An instinctive, even primitive need linked to survival, but taken to the extreme by society’s oppression of queer people, denying them to live out their fantasies or basic sexual attraction shamelessly.
Hence, in the center of Cruz's work stands the reaction of gay men to systemic humiliation of queer sexual desire, manifesting itself in a hunt for short-term pleasure and quick gratification, fueled by a suppressed, yet volcanic lust.
The color blue stereotypically stands for boys. There is only room for boys/men. Cruz uses it in his work as a way to point out the “mask for mask” attitude, commonly found in the community.
Furthermore, and as an extension to the artist initial idea, is inspired by Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away, more specifically, by his general treatment of food and the scenes in the bathhouse. A world filled with gluttonous, phantasmagorical characters. The manner in which the creatures devoure everything on their way (or even fight for it!) echoes with how Curz wishes to represent the human body as both a vessel and a fount of sexual desire.
Ces souvenirs, qui n'appartiennent qu'à moi – Manon Diederich
The work „ces souvenirs, qui n’appartiennent qu’à moi“ represents a visual reflection on the artist’s memories oscillating between Senegal and China. Based on photographic material taken during her ethnographic fieldwork in both countries (throughout a period of 7 years) the artist invites the viewer on an intimate journey to ephemere spaces - hard to locate in both place and time. Following a rather intuitive logic and due to its fragmented character, the work goes beyond seemingly apparent China-Africa narratives and, by means of open association, raises questions of representation.
32° and tears – Pol Trierweiler
32° and tearis a project Pol Trierweiler has been working on for over 2 years. It is centered around a place in the south of France he visits every year with his family. Trierweiler has always taken this escape for granted and it is only now that he has been wondering about the passing of time. About how he is going to look back on these trips when they do stop someday.
So, he decided to document this place to which he feels so connected, to have something to look back on in the comingyears. He specifically wanted to include the people who make these trips so special in this series, focusing on their little habits and gestures. He confronts these quiet scenes from their daily life with pictures of the rich vegetation that mesmerizes him ever since his first visit.
