The Centre national de l’audiovisuel (CNA) is pleased to offer a legal workshop specifically designed for LARS members.

Led by lawyers Karine Riahi and Julien Brunet from the law firm Brunet Riahi, which specialises in intellectual property and new technologies law, this training session will address the day-to-day contractual challenges faced by authors and directors, as well as the recent disruptions caused by artificial intelligence in the creative sector.

Schedule:

Part 1 (morning session): Safeguarding your rights and understanding your contracts

The aim of this first session is to secure the creative process for authors by avoiding common pitfalls. It offers a practical refresher on copyright and contract negotiation, directly grounded in real-life experiences:

• Overview and analysis of industry-wide agreements.
• Explanation of contractual terminology (definition of versions, approval of drafting stages, etc.).
• Discussion on the importance of ensuring clear definitions in contracts to prevent misunderstandings.

Part 2 (afternoon): Artificial Intelligence and intellectual property

The rapid evolution of generative tools is raising unprecedented challenges, giving rise to legitimate concerns shared by both authors and producers. This second part will explore the grey areas of AI and ways to protect your works:

• Analysis of clauses relating to platforms and intellectual property (issues of transparency).
• A look back at the landmark agreements of 2023 in the United States and a discussion on the principle of reciprocity.
• The legal status of the work: How should it be characterized in the context of AI? Or: The prompt as a potential act of creation?
• Practical strategies: returning to the very essence of copyright by learning to document one’s creative process rigorously.

BRUNET RIAHI is a Paris-based law firm specialising in intellectual property law, film and audiovisual law, and new technologies law. Karine Riahi: A member of the Paris Bar since 1989, Karine Riahi specialises in film law, audiovisual law, and intellectual property. She advises producers, artists, and production companies on the drafting and negotiation of contracts, as well as on the legal protection of their works.

Julien Brunet: Julien Brunet, a member of the Paris Bar and an Attorney at Law in California, specialises in technology law and intellectual property as applied to the entertainment industries. His dual French-American background enables him to offer an international perspective on film and audiovisual law.
