Missions
The 1989 law establishing the Centre national de l'audiovisuel, along with the laws of 2004 and 2022 regarding the reorganization of state cultural institutes, define the missions of the CNA, which can be outlined in five key points:
Archiving
As the national archive of audiovisual production in Luxembourg, the CNA ensures the preservation of the national audiovisual heritage through legal deposit and conserves moving images, sound documents, and various photographic media in appropriate facilities. It also acquires historical and contemporary audiovisual documents according to a collection policy aimed at preserving and enriching Luxembourg's audiovisual heritage. Both physical and digital documents are cataloged and digitized to ensure their longevity and accessibility.
Research
In connection with its collections, the CNA documents and studies the production and dissemination of Luxembourg's audiovisual heritage without distinction of language. It publishes its work in various formats and provides both professional and amateur audiences with resources related to the processing and use of audiovisual documents. The CNA also offers an annual program of conferences, seminars, artist discussions, and film screenings.
Production
The CNA supports professional and emerging audiovisual creators through the establishment of scholarship programs, residencies, and competitions, often in collaboration with other state institutions, municipalities, and national and international associations. The CNA fulfills its production mission by either commissioning photographic and cinematic works from individual or collective artists or by providing them with opportunities to publish and disseminate their creations.
Mediation
The CNA also serves as a museum, a media library, and a cinema that showcase works and host artistic and educational events aimed at a broad audience. Various spaces feature temporary exhibitions that reflect both historical and contemporary photographic creation, as well as internationally renowned permanent collections, such as Edward Steichen's The Family of Man, presented at Clervaux Castle. In connection with the CNA's collections and activities, the media library 'Médiathèque' acquires books and audiovisual documents, which it makes available free of charge to the public. The two cinema halls of CinéStarlight screen current films and re-runs, with particular attention given to children's films and school screenings.
Training
The CNA raises awareness and introduces all audiences to the use of audiovisual media. Its mission of training and knowledge transfer is based on an educational program focused on visual literacy through film screenings, meetings, and both school and extracurricular workshops. Additionally, the creation of innovative teaching materials allows for the communication of the challenges related to audiovisual media and Luxembourg's cultural heritage. The CNA also organizes professional training sessions with international experts and participates in the ongoing education of teachers in Luxembourg. Finally, it is tasked with advising state and municipal administrations on methods of collection, circulation, processing, and archiving.
