In 1955, amateur filmmakers Levy and Laux, members of the ACE (Amateurs Cinéastes Esch) documented in an 8mm film the operation of the Hubert Frères shoe factory in Tétange.
While several witnesses of the time evoke the existence of a film about the factory, the film in question, however, remained hidden until 2017 when Madame Mady Laux, the daughter of one of the filmmakers, entrusted the work of his father at the Centre national de l’audiovisuel (CNA). The film is digitized by the CNA and the composer Pol Belardi receives the commission to produce a sound creation to accompany the screening of the film as part of "Esch2022" – European Capital of Culture.
The first screening of the film thus restored will take place on December 17, 2022 at the Schungfabrik in the form of a live screening with Pol Belardi performing his sound creation live.
Built between 1912 and 1917 by the Hubert family, the shoe factory mainly produced gaiters and work shoes. Later, it specialized in metal-tipped shoes. With the rapid development of the steel industry and the skyrocketing number of miners, this type of shoe was in great demand back then. At its peak, the company employed up to 70 people. It closed its doors in 1966.
Since 1990, the “Schungfabrik” Cultural Center has been located in the building that once housed the factory. The film will thus experience a new life in the very place where it was shot in 1955.
