The Family of Man
UNESCO, Mémoire du Monde
A humanist, photographic panorama
The Family of Man is a legendary photographic exhibition, created by Luxembourg-born photographer Edward Steichen for the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York in 1955.
The exhibition reflects post-war humanist photography, intended to be a manifesto for peace and the fundamental equality of men throughout the world. The images of photographers such as Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Wayne Miller, are staged in a modernist and spectacular way.
After an international tour, it is now permanently installed in Clervaux Castle and is part of UNESCO's Memory of the World. The exhibition is open to the public between March and December each year. Original and fragile photographs and their state of conservation are regularly monitored by a specialized restorer during the annual closure in January and February.
