This 2-day workshop with screenwriter Ellis Freeman aims to refresh and deliver an injection of creative energy into your writing process. A writer learns more from the experience of trying things out than from any instruction book or lecture. Here is a chance to experiment, have fun, engage your playfulness and stimulate story ideas.

Developed over ten years of workshops, the Writers Gym' is a collection of games and exercises to stretch your writer's muscles and offer insights into the mechanisms of story. The approach is a practical one; solving creative problems, with practical tools to help the writer to find new writing habits. By working on group exercises, you'll also get the chance to hone your teamworking skills - vital in such a collaborative medium as filmmaking.

There will be modules on Creativity and Inspiration, Characters, Plot and Theme.

We will conclude with a short Writers' Surgery where Ellis will answer participants' questions about the writer's process.

ELLIS FREEMAN

With a background in print and TV journalism, Ellis has been writing screenplays for over 15 years. He has had commissions from BFI, Channel Four, The Film Council, Rai (Italy), Fox Searchlight and the MEDIA programme.

With Brazilian director, Henrique Goldman, he wrote PRINCESA, an award-winning feature about a transvestite prostitute living in Milan. The film was screened at the Sundance festival 2001 and has been released in the US, UK, France, Germany and Scandinavia. He also co-wrote JANUARY 2ND, a comedy feature for director Matt Winn which screened widely at festivals.

A regular lecturer at the London Film School, Ellis also holds creative writing seminars at the DFFB in Berlin for directors, writers and producers. He is an advisor at the Binger Filmlab in Amsterdam, a tutor on the Low Budget Film Forum and has held creative writing workshops at the Scuola Holden in Turin and the Berlinale Talents. 

As well as writing, he has worked as a script consultant on both features and shorts. He is also currently developing a slate of feature projects with Clownfish Films, the company he runs with producing partner, Luke Schiller. 

Ce workshop de 2 jours avec Ellis Freeman a comme objectif de donner du nouvel élan créatif dans le processus d’écriture des scénaristes. Un auteur apprend bien plus en expérimentant des choses qu’en restant plongé dans les livres théoriques ou de simples cours. Ce workshop offre la possibilité d’expérimenter, de s’amuser, d’encourager votre côté ludique et de stimuler ainsi le développement d’idées.

Le workshop « Writers’ Gym » est un ensemble de jeux et d’exercices destiné à entrainer vos « muscles narratifs », à révéler les mécanismes de la narration, et à trouver de nouvelles habitudes d’écriture.

Le cours comprend des modules sur la créativité, l’inspiration, les personnages, l’intrigue et la thématique.

La formation sera clôturée par une session de « Writers’ Surgery », donnant aux participants la possibilité de poser toutes leurs questions sur le processus d’écriture.
